After a moment of silence, UGOOS unveiled the latest Android TV Box on its website called UGOOS AM8. AM8 TV Box is a fully “true 8K TV Box” whose heart is the Amlogic S928X-J chipset. This S928X SoC in the “J” variant is a penta-core Cortex-A76/A55 processor with Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU that supports the Dolby Vision, and Dolby Audio license, just like the recently described BOXY streamer with Amlogic S905X4-J SoC. In addition, the upcoming UGOOS AM8 S928X-J Smart TV Box will offer up to 8K@60fps AV1 video decoding, metal housing with heatsink, WiFi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, and well-known advanced features from UGOOS.
Although earlier we could see IPTV/OTT devices for operators (via SDMC and SEI Robotics) powered by Amlogic S928X SoC, it seems that UGOOS AM8 Android TV Box will be the first S928X media player on the market that will soon reach individual users.
UGOOS AM8 S922X-J 8K TV Box Details
UGOOS has shared a lot of information about the new AM8 TV Box, both device features and specifications. First of all, it will have a renewed metal housing with dimensions of 11.6 x 11.6 x 2.8 cm under which there is a substantial heatsink. As in previous models, the device has a dual external antenna. Inside we find the mentioned Amlogic S928X-J chipset featuring:
- Penta-core CPU with 1x Cortex-A76 core and 4x Cortex-A55 cores.
- Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, supporting OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.2, and OpenCL 2.0.
- A VPU with an 8Kp60 video decoder and a low-latency 4Kp60 encoder.
- Up to 3.2 TOPS Neural Network Accelerator (NNA) with Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) architecture
Apart from that, the AM8 will come with 4GB DDR4 RAM and 32GB eMMC, and a microSD card slot.
What distinguishes current 4K media players is 8K resolution. UGOOS AM8 not only plays back 8K content but also outputs it at a staggering 8Kp60 with AV1 codec support. In addition, the UGOOS AM8 S928X-J TV Box supports 802.11ax WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 BLE, and Gigabit Ethernet. Users will not complain about the lack of I/O ports, because the AM8 TV Box includes the following ports:
- 3x USB 3.0
- USB TYPE-C OTG 2.0
- HDMI 2.1a Type-A 8Kx4K max resolution
- SPDIF optical
- RJ45 Gigabit LAN
- TYPE-C 12V/1.67A
- Micro SD card slot
- AUX-IN port
The upcoming UGOOS AM8 media player is expected to run on Android 11 OS as well as offer OTA firmware updates and UGOOS advanced features. This includes a SAMBA server, NFS and CIFS clients, a superuser switch (Magisk) to enable/disable root access, a remote server to use your phone as a remote control, and various other customizations.
By the way, it is worth noting that UGOOS AM8 succeeds the Amlogic S922X-J powered UGOOS AM6 Plus, presenting enhanced performance with its penta-core setup. Benchmarked against its predecessor, the AM8 model exhibits a significantly higher Antutu score, raising the score from around 130K points to an impressive 210K points.
Availability and price
While pricing details remain undisclosed, the AM6 Plus’s $176 sets (on Amazon $190) a reference point, imply a reasonable increase for the AM8. Besides, the AM8 TV box will be shipped with a Bluetooth LE remote control (UR01-BLE model), an HDMI cable, a 12V power supply, and USB-C cable, and a short user guide.
