Chromecast 4K 2024 with S905X5 SoC, new remote control, and…
In fact, since January 2023, there have been rumors about the upcoming new Chromecast 4K. Recently, new information has appeared via 9to5Google.
It has been 4 years since the release of the previous Chromecast 4K with Google TV. Although it still serves the streaming market well, quite a lot has changed, including AV1 decoding support. It is therefore not surprising that Google decided to refresh its streamer and prepare another one for the next few years. The 2020 model (now for $49.99) runs on the Amlogic S905X3 SoC (12nm process, Quad-core Arm Cortex-A55 up @1.9GHz), but the latest Chromecast will feature the upgraded Amlogic S905X5 SoC (6 nm process), promising significant enhancements over its predecessor. S905X5 SoC offers Quad-core ARM V9 4TOPS NPU, 40K+(up to 45K) DMIPS processor with ARM Mali G310 V5 1GHz GPU. Additionally, it supports AI acceleration 4 TOPS NPU enabling AI-SR and reducing power consumption by up to 50%. Besides, it supports the latest video decoding up to 2x 4Kp60 10-bit H.266/VCC and AV1 video codecs, and the usual VP9, AVS3, H.265/HEVC, H.264.
The device is expected to have more than the current 2GB RAM and 8GB eMMC storage. We can also expect support for WiFi 6, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. While the current model with Google TV is still based on Android TV 12, it can be assumed that the new model will ship with Android TV 14 and thus have a new home screen and an improved audio output switcher.
The article doesn’t delve into the details of the new remote. However, a video discovered in last year’s Android 14 beta showcased a remote reminiscent of the one bundled with the existing Google Chromecast with Google TV, albeit with additional buttons. Among these buttons is one that resembles a star or “magic” button, hinting at potential user customization for quick access to favorite apps or TV inputs.
As soon as we have more details, we will let you know immediately.
