Recently, there have been leaks on the Internet that Google is about to release a new Chromecast with Google TV 4K. This should not be surprising, since the last model, i.e. from mid-2020, has been over 2 years. During this time, a lot has changed, for example, the introduction of streaming supporting the AV1 codec. Also, recently Google released the 2022 Chromecast with Google TV in HD version. Compared to the current 4K model, it is cheaper but has a processor supporting AV1 codec, and as the name suggests, it supports displaying up to 1080p @60fps. Hence, without a doubt, the emergence of a new 4K version is inevitable.
New Chromecast with Google TV 4K 2023 is on the way
As reported by 9to5Google: “In the latest preview update to the Google Home app, the company includes early preparation for a new Google TV device, referred to as “YTC.” Elsewhere in the code, it’s directly confirmed that this is indeed a “Chromecast with Google TV” — alongside previous models “YTV” (Chromecast with Google TV) and “YTB” (Chromecast HD),”. So far, there is no information when the new Chromecast 4K would appear. In addition, there is no information about the specifications.
What can we expect? Certainly support for 4K AV1 decoding. Perhaps a chipset from Amlogic dedicated to streaming TV Sticks / TV Dongles called Amlogic S905Y4 SoC will be used. It has been present in streaming devices on the market for a long time, for example in the Xiaomi TV Stick 4K. Given Google’s ambitions and momentum, we’re hoping to see a newer chipset inside that supports the AV1 codec as well as the VVC/H.266 codec. In addition, probably everyone expects more RAM, and above all eMMC storage. A second USB-C port for connecting accessories or extra storage would also be welcome.
That’s enough from our side. We will let you know as soon as new information becomes available. In the meantime, pay attention to the alternative and one of the more interesting certified 4K streaming TV Dongles with 4K AV1 decoding support called Homatics Dongle G 4K.
