First impressions, settings, overview of features

The Sunvell T95 is a small, well and solidly made TV Box in a black metal housing. The aluminum housing does not shine and looks solidly at the front is a a small LED digital display. The front panel has also IR receiver and power LED. On one side is a two USB 2.0 port, OTG port and micro SD card slot. On the rear panel are: 5V DC jack, AV port, RJ45 Ethernet port and HDMI 2.0 port.

Booting Android to the “home screen” takes about 00:33.4 seconds (very good result). “Home screen” launcher T95 looks very simple, easy to use and familiar. In addition to the remote control I used a standard keyboard and mouse, MINIX A2 LiteUnfortunately I could not use my favorite Xiaomi gamepad because Sunvell T95 does not have bluetooth.

When you start T95 you can not skip the really beautiful boot animation, which is presented below.

The  TV Box can additionally be controlled using the application on the smartphone. Download here – U1_remote.apk. The application works with TV boxes  based on SoC Amlogic: S905, S812 and S805. The device worked in the resolution of FHD 1920×1080 (1080p 60Hz) but you can also adjust the preferred resolution (also 4K) or set the auto mode Launcher includes icons in different sized, enabling available for the most important functions, inter alia: Kodi, Apps, Music, Browser, Settings etc. and also as at the top of the screen found a Dropbox and Clean Memory app. The Sunvell T95 has also DLNA, Miracast and Airplay. In the specification T95 is the information that has internal memory of 8GB but there is only 4.8GB. I had no problem with Ethernet and WiFi connection to my router. The remote control and A2 Lite works without a problem. TV Box also comes with several preinstalled applications like Netflix, MegaBox HD, Sky HD, etc. Everything worked quickly without delays. Below a few screenshots.

The T95 TV Box  is another TV Box which has KODI Jarvis (more precisely KODI 16.0 Jarvis Beta3) version with TVAddons.

On the Sunvell T95 you can play, but unfortunately the firmware from which you have received the device had some errors and when you download from Google Play appeared information about incompatibility.

However, after installing the new firmware “T95-1G1230” (more on this later) was able to install and run some games: Fruit Ninja, Asphalt and Beach Buggy Racing with high resolution.

Operating system and components

The Sunvell T95 runs on the Android 5.1 Lollipop, namely version 5.1.1 and the Linux Kernel version 3.14.29. Unfortunately installed firmware (build number LMY47V.20151123 test-keys) on the unit we received had the incompatibility problem, we turned to “own sources” of the latest firmware T95-1G1230 (build number LMY47V.20151218 test-keys). In spite of installation of a new firmware problem has not been fully resolved and some apps on Google Play showed information about incompatibility (like Antutu3D Bench)

TV Box is equipped in the recently very popular a SoC Amlogic S905 Quad core 64-bit  Cortex A53 Up to 2.0GHz processor and GPU Mali-450, CPU speed between 100 MHz and 2.02 GHz. On the following screens you can see exactly the components used and their specification (Information taken from the CPU-Z app). Unfortunately,Amlogic S905 is not yet recognized in the applications only detected ARM CortexA53. Also, the model device is detected as T95 (p201) and board p201.

After using the DRM info (app) we know that T95 not supported Google Widevine Moudlar DRM, and unfortunately does not supported Microsoft Playready DRM.

Performance tests and benchmarks

For testing I use the AnTuTu Video Tester 3.0 app and AnTuTu Benchmark 5.7.1, because it failed to install Antutu 3DBench addon to AnTuTu Benchmark 6.0 (not compatible with the unit).

The following screenshots from the video test. The result 906 , better than Minix Neo U1 (result 899), K1 Plus TV Box (result 886) but worse than Beelink Mini MX (result 920). Also worthy of note is that T95 did not have not supported codecs.

Video playback by Kodi Jarvis (16.0 Beta 3) and MX Player runs smoothly and stable. The T95 TV Box without problem seems plays movies with the resolution of480p,720p and1080p(24fps, 30fps, 60fps) and also 4K (60fps) with various codecs video such as H.264, H.265, MPEG2, MPEG4, RMVB and audio – DTS and AC3. Also I tested several videoformats – AVI, MKV, MP4 (typical formats in which it holds the majority of films) and also videos wasplayed without any problems. The tested Sunvell T95 plays video files in 4K (also 60fps) without any major problems. The following table compares Kodi and MX Player for some video samples. Also copes well with playing the video on YouTube.

Conclusions

Sunvell T95

The Sunvell T95 is a small, well and solidly made TV Box in a black metal housing. On the digital LED display shows information about the type of connection (HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and also boot info) and standard current time. As we said at the beginning of his heart is a new Amlogic S905 Quad core 64-bit  Cortex A53 Up to 2.0GHz processor which supports UHD [email protected] HW decoding, multiple formats including H.265 10-bit, H.264, AVS+ and also FHD 1080p @60fps HW encoding, H.264. Plays typical video content in 1080p and copes well with the video in 4K (also with 60fps). The T95 has nice and an easy to use UI which provides quick and intuitive access to key features.  Unfortunately, the firmware has currently compatibility problem with some applications and games. We hope that the manufacturer will soon prepare firmware in which this problem will be fixed. Once again I want to say thanks to Gearbest for sending us a Sunvell T95 sample. The big advantage of the T95 is the price (now costs $39.68 + free shipping). If you are looking a TV Box with Amlogic S905 chip, which copes well with play most video files and 4K, like TV Boxes with digital display and do not want to undermine its own budget – Sunvell T95 is for you.

Hi Great review thanks. What is your source for the firmware? I haven’t been able to find their support site.

              • ast_team

Hi, The file with new firmware received from Gearbest and Vensmile

                • Eben van Ellewee

Thanks for this. I used it to restore my box after I played a little too much with the xposed framework 🙂
By the way I have found that it is not 5Ghz band capable of advertised unfortunately.
If you would like to remove the boot video you can do it in the build.conf after rooting.( You then see a MBOX bootanimation)
Only real issues I have is netflix playback just sitting at loading(used xposed to fix this) and the fact that droidmote is causing play services crashes on this box for some reason.

                  • Txema Garcia

                    Hi,

How do you fix it the Netflix issue with Xposed?

                    • Eben van Ellewee

Installed the xposed framework for vega s95 and applied the netflix workaround module that you can find on xda forums.

                    • Killian1980

                      Hi,
please….can u link the netflix workaround on XDA forums? I’ve not found one working… 🙁
                      Regards

yes of course you can always install OGMod version of Youtube for full resolution support if you like 🙂

                  • ast_team

I agree there is a problem with Netflix, the problem with loading video

                  • red man

How did you root? I got mine today but it wont root using the wifi method I used on the mxq & mxq pro. Any help please? I’m also missing the status & navigation bars.

                    • Eben van Ellewee

                      I used this method: http://goo.gl/uwdp7n
The Nav and status bars are missing in this box. It might be possible to bring them back with Xposed framework but I didn’t try.

                    • red man

Thanks. I ended up figuring it root with ezroot.zip and stock recovery, a few hours ago. I’m going to try replacing the systemui with one from another android 5.1, possible framework files if needed. I’ll post my findings.

            • Txema Garcia

Hi, Thank you for the review

The firmware is in .img format and the update is more complicated. Can you ask for the SD version of the update? Do you think they will release more updates? Through OTA, maybe?

              • ast_team

Hi, A lot of questions that do not know the answer 🙂 I will ask for the SD version (although it is not difficult to update the T95 using an image file (.img)).

                • mike dan

What method are you using? Tried usb burning tool , would not work

                  • ast_team

I used the method which described androidpcreview with Amlogic USB Burning Tool link here:http://androidpcreview.com/how-to-use-the-amlogic-usb-burning-tool-to-manually-update-firmware/3749/. Do you have problem that USB Burning tool does not detect the connected device?

                    • mike dan

No the issue inhavr with usb burning tool is aftrr about 4 percent it fails

                    • mike dan

Also having issues finding status bar

                    • ast_team

you mean bar at the bottom?

                    • mike dan

Yes i cannot find it or un hide it or find and option to un hide it

                    • ast_team

Have you tried hold down the left or right mouse button, drag the cursor from the bottom to the top of the screen? If this does not help please be patient as I find a free moment check.

                    • Justin

Stock launcher doesn’t have it. Test out some from play store there are some great ones and free

                    • ast_team

you use this version USB_Burning_Tool_v2.0.6.2 build 2?

            • mike dan

do you know how to unhide the bottom navigation bar?

              • James

I recommend rooting then getting rid of the navigation bar by editing an extra line into the build.prop. Then install LMT launcher (search on XDA). It’s by far the best solution, the nav bar that came on this thing was utterly terrible.

                • mike dan

Thanks i was trying to actually get the nav bar but my t95 bit the dust before i ever got the chance..

                  • James

That’s my worry with this thing. It seems a bit temperamental.

              • Justin

                Use. Different launcher

            • Bob Loblaw

I bought mine at geekbuying, advertised as having bluetooth and dual band wifi: AP6330 chip
The sticker on the box even says 5Ghz WIFI BT but no Bluetooth settings and AIDA64 says its only 2.5ghz wifi…false advertisement by the manufacturer. The power cord is also ridiculously short and the IR range is very weak, keys are very clicky. Thanks for that app though, it is very handy.
Also the time on the front display doesn’t show in 24H…i have never seen such a thing.

            • James

I bought an Easytone T95-2G off Amazon UK and, contrary to this review, it has Bluetooth and it works perfectly (I copied around ten apk files across from my phone). I also had no issues rooting it. A few issues though, namely compatibility problems as mentioned in the review, I couldn’t get Nova Launcher to install, and a few others too. Some worked with a manual copy of the apk file to /system/priv-app and a 644 permission change but some still didn’t work. Hopefully we see a firmware update that rectifies this, although I’ll be interested to see if firmware updates are compatible across brands given that the hardware appears to be and should be identical. I also can’t change that damn annoying boot video, and it’s not in /system/media as per normal.

              • James

Thanks to the comment below, I’ve now fixed the boot animation. I’ve also run AIDA64 on the box, and it does indeed list the 5ghz band as not supported. That seriously annoys me as it’s one of the reasons I purchased this box. That is simply outright lying by the manufacturer, it’s not as if it’s a simple mistake to make. Cheating b********s. I’ve half a mind to return it but it’s a good box and, for £35, there can’t be much complaint.

            • James

Another annoying thing about the T95 is the total lack of multi tasking. If you’re in an application and close it using the home button, it will close the application. This even happens with my OpenVPN application, closing my connection to AirVPN. You have to exit the application using the back button, but even then you’re not guaranteed it will stay open.

I would love a minimal vanilla Marshmallow rom for this. The Lollipop build that comes with it is ropey at best.

              • Justin

It multitasks. You just don’t see it as remote has no way to pull it up. I see it when using the button on a keyboard. Nothing truly closes BTW. So u close something it stays open indefinitely even if you power off then on it is running there still

                • James

I don’t use the remote, it’s still in the box. I have an air mouse and use LMT launcher from which I can open recent apps no issues. And unfortunately, apps only stay open in the background if you don’t use the home button to exit them, if you do that they close as indicated above. It will even close an active VPN connection when you press the home button from within the OpenVPN Connect app (fortunately I have a kill switch set up via AFWall+ so there is no data leaks when this happens). It also closes LMT if you press home from it’s settings, despite it being a root application. You need to use the back button to exit an app if you want it to stay open in the background. I’ve not come across this before on any other device in the 7 years I’ve used Android.

                  • You need to use the back button to exit an app if you want it to stay open in the background.

Thank you for that ridiculously easy answer. i’ve been trying to get my VPN to stay connect on a Mini Mx (s905) but it was always logging off.

            • Steve Smith

I bought this box from Easytone via Amazon UK and have had problems due to no status bar. I have found that with a k/b connected the alt+tab combination brings up the list of recent apps and releasing the tab while holding the alt allows the list to be cleared, or an app to be selected, using a mouse. The problem of no notifications still remains.

The Kodi, and plugins, installed was unusable but removing and installing v16.1 from the playstore and installing my fav plugins sorted that one.

            • Parnell

I tried the remote app that you used (RemoteIME), and it doesn’t work for my Sunvell T95m. It just searches for servers but never finds the T95. Any clues, someone? The phone is on the same wifi as the box

            • Tiffany

I have a problem, when using my t95 to surf the Web, it blinks and goes back to the home screen. Why is it doing this?

              • Steve Smith

I suggest installing Avast Cleanup to see if the problem is that the system needs a sweep. If that doesnt help use another browser. I recommend Puffin which is quick and easy to use.

            • I love the review this is good for me also can i buy these tv from https://lubel.com.au/collections/android-tv-box i don’t do already there anyone has a experience with site.

            • Good review ever i have bought this one from this store https://tvlocker.com/collections/android-tv-boxes

junk…..the video they show at start up…. mine the sound is poor. I payed 85.00
SO MUCH BUFFERING , nothing working. this is the future of tv…….joke.

              • Steve Smith

                Seems expensive – £41.80 (51.94$)

& FREE Delivery from Amazon UK at the moment. Make sure the sound is set at Auto or HDMI – I have mine connected to my hifi via a USB dac and works fine. Uninstall the Kodi and install afresh from the playstore and use the TVAddons wizard for starters. Check Youtube for more plugins and things should be improved.

                • Tom

as supplied the kodi on my box was beta and would not update via playstore – uninstalled and the v16.1 (current stable version) installed and works fine.
my tv is a LG hd but with the box video set at auto works at 1920×1080 50hz – doesnt like being set manually at 60hz….
                    have you tried a different hdmi cable/socket combination – a hdmi cable v1.4 not 1.3 ?

Upgrading the box to Kodi 17 Krypton is impossible. I have enabled .apk wild versions.. but the box refuses to do anything other than play movies for 20 minutes and then freeze. Don’t buy this piece of junk.. it can’t be upgraded, doesn’t play local or other content without freezing. I have wasted weeks, on this box.. I wanted to learn about Kodi.. this box hasn’t taught Me much other than: If You buy the cheapest Chinese Kodi box out there.. You will pay for it.

Hi Drew, on my box the installed Kodi was a beta version of v16 which would not upgrade so I uninstalled it and installed v16.1 from the playstore and I have been very happy with it. Recently the Playstore automatically upgraded 16.1 to 17 without a hitch apart from a couple of plugins that required uninstalling and reinstalling for them to work. At the moment Exodus plays movies fine.
I suggest you uninstall your version of Kodi and reinstall or at least do a fresh start.

One of the problems I have with this box: I can’t install “anything” .. I have enabled .. alternate usb.. image or whatever .. but this box won’t let Me change anything. Period! I can’t change any android apps, I can’t change anything.

                • Drew Carter

Thanks, Steve.. one question: How does one uninstall the 16.1 ..?

                  • Steve Smith

You should be able to uninstall any apps by “Settings” then “Apps” and the option should be there. If you can’t do it that way, open the Playstore, select the app and “Open” and “Uninstall” should be shown. If Kodi is not listed in the installed apps then it’s been sideloaded and if you can’t use the first method I am at a loss.
I am still using the box with the firmware as it came and have some compatability problems with Playstore apps but all apps that I have wanted to install I have been able to “sideload” them. I possibly “sideloaded” Kodi 16.1 but it definately automatically updated to 17.
If you need to “sideload” Kodi 17, it is available for download from a number of sites.

I contacted them on Facebook and they said to ship it to them and they would reprogram it and send it back. Look for one box tv

Terrible way to use Kodi. Remote has a range of maybe three feet. Takes half an hour to find the show I want to watch. I guess if you buy a wireless keyhboard and mouse and use it to surf it’s good. I wanted to use Kodi. Completely out of patience with the crap.
