The new Orange Pi 5 Plus is the latest Single Board Computer (SBC) from Orange Pi (Shenzhen Xunlong Software CO., Limited). This SBC marks the company’s first venture into the Rockchip RK3588 series and builds upon the success of the earlier Rockchip RK3588S-based Orange Pi 5 and Orange Pi 5B models. The Orange Pi 5 Plus boasts a wider range of high-end interfaces, making it a compelling choice for tech enthusiasts and professionals alike. The Orange Pi 5 Plus SCB variant with 4GB RAM starts at $99 on Amazon.
Orange Pi 5 Plus Single Board Computer Overview Features
Besides the Rockchip RK3588 processor (4x Cortex A76 cores (up to 2.4GHz); 4x Cortex-A55 cores (up to 1.8GHz); Arm Mali-G610 GPU; 6 TOPS NPU), Orange Pi 5 Plus has incorporated two 2.5GbE networking interfaces, support for NVMe SSD storage with speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s, and expanded display capabilities. The board features four display interfaces, including two HDMI 2.1 ports, MIPI DSI, and USB-C with DisplayPort Alt. mode. Additionally, an extra M.2 socket is provided for optional WiFi 6 and Bluetooth connectivity.
Although the dimensions of the Orange Pi 5 Plus SCB are slightly larger than its predecessors, the board remains cost-effective by excluding the eMMC flash from the 5B variant. Users can choose to utilize an eMMC flash module or connect an NVMe SSD via the M.2 2280 socket. Furthermore, WiFi 6 is now an optional feature. The SBC supports various operating systems, including Orange Pi OS (Droid and Arch Linux), Ubuntu, Debian, and Android 12. Armbian is also expected to offer support in the future, as Orange Pi has invested in platinum support for the Orange Pi 5/5B boards.
Interestingly, the Orange Pi 5 Plus shares remarkable similarities with FriendlyELEC’s NanoPC-T6, giving the impression that both companies collaborated closely during development. This renders the recently announced Banana Pi BPI-WP3, which boasts a similar feature set, somewhat irrelevant unless one specifically requires the BPI-RK3588 core module for a custom carrier board.
