Google has recently introduced a new feature on Android TV that aims to enhance convenience for users. The addition of a “Shop” tab directly on the main interface allows users to access Google’s extensive library of films available for purchase or rental without the need to open a separate app.
Shop tab on Android TV some details
Initially launching in the United States, the Shop tab will gradually roll out globally in the coming weeks. While specific regions have not been specified, reports suggest that it will be available in 23 markets in addition to the United States.
One of the key advantages of the Shop tab is its ability to consolidate all previously purchased content from various Google online stores, including YouTube, Google TV, and the Google Play Movies and TV app. Users can easily locate their purchased content in the “Library” section after clicking on the tab.
In a blog post, Google expressed its excitement about introducing the new Shop tab on Android TV, stating, “Today, we are excited to introduce the new Shop tab on Android TV. The Shop tab lets you explore movies to buy or rent and make purchases directly on your Android TV.”
While it remains unclear whether it is possible to use Google Opinion Rewards credits to purchase titles from the Shop tab, it is reasonable to expect that this feature will be available. Google’s existing apps for renting and buying media already support the use of Opinion Rewards credits.
While this update may not be of great interest to those who primarily consume content from streaming services like Netflix, it caters to a significant number of Android TV users who prefer occasional purchases over subscription-based models.
The addition of the Shop tab aligns with Google’s broader strategy to streamline the content purchasing and renting process on Android TV. Last year, the company removed the option to purchase content from the Google Play store, redirecting users to the new Google TV app as the designated platform for content acquisition.
With the introduction of the Shop tab, Google aims to provide Android TV users with a seamless and centralized experience for exploring, purchasing, and renting movies directly from their Android TV interface.
