Intel in its new NUC mini PC applied a very interesting solution, and more specifically interchangeable lids. This approach works when there is no such USB ports for connecting additional peripherals, just the sparkle lid the Intel NUC to enjoy additional functionality.
The lid that covers the top of Intel’s new NUC computers is both removeable and replaceable. You can swap out a black lid for a model with a different color or create a 3D printed lid with your company logo or just about any other graphic on it.
The new Intel NUCs come in three flavors:
- Rock Canyon – NUC5xxRYx (consumer Core. E.g. NUC5i5RYK)
- Maple Canyon – NUC5xxMYxE (high end Core. Eg. NUC5i5MYBE)
- Pinnacle Canyon – NUC5CPYH, NUC5PPYH (consumer Braswell / Celeron -based.)
But you can also add a lid that has NFC, 4G LTE, or other features. Intel says you could add an SDXC card reader, RS232 port, VGA port, or additional USB ports, for example. The company says replacement lids will be available from third-party manufacturers if you don’t feel like designing and building your own.
In our opinion, this solution creates a lot of opportunities to use Intel NUC and match to suit your needs depending on their use.
