Review: MECOOL KM7 First impressions, settings, overview of features
KM7 is a well-made TV Box. It has a typical shape and a black color of the housing. The entire housing is made of matte plastic. Whereas, at the top there is a logo set on shiny plastic. It looks nice, but we advise you not to touch it with your fingers or there will be prints.
On the front panel you will find LED indicators (Power, Net and IR). The left side there are two USB 2.0 ports and a TF card slot. On the back of the housing we find: AV OUT port, DC jack, RJ45 Fast Ethernet port, and HDMI 2.1. At the bottom of the device, there are four rubber pads to prevent shifting, holes for better ventilation, and information about the TV Box version and MAC address.
Streaming Box comes with Bluetooth Voice remote that looks similar to the G10 Android TV / Google TV reference design Bluetooth Voice remote control. Voice remote control featuring Google Assistant, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Spotify shortcut keys, plus Android TV navigation buttons including a guide button, home and back buttons, direction keys, and a watchlist button.
Recognition of voice commands via Google Assistant works without major problems. Below pictures.
KM7 streaming box runs on Android TV 11, so the operation on Android TV is known to most of you, or you could read about it in our previous reviews. Working with the device is child’s play from the moment of commissioning and configuration to everyday use.
Throughout testing, there were no problems with the device. KM7 was fast and stable. WiFi connection works well, stable, and fast. Wifi: Download – 174.2Mbps Upload – 63.3Mbps, Fast Ethernet: Download – 93.7Mbps Upload – 97.5Mbps. In addition to the Bluetooth remote control with voice feature, we used a Logitech MK540 Advanced set and a gamepad from iPega called iPega PG-9076. By the way, Bluetooth remote control with the voice control feature works very well. You do not have to navigate the remote control, just tell what you are looking for. Chromecast built-in works fine. You can also use the preinstalled ASAir Screen application
Besides, on the KM2 TV Box can play popular games like, Asphalt 8, Beach Buggy Racing, Space Marshals (we used iPega PG-9076 and keyboard), and also via NVIDIA GeForce NOW without any problems. Additionally, KM7 device has pre-installed IPTV application. We used the free of 5000+ publicly available IPTV channels from all over the world .m3u (Github source here). It is also worth mentioning that the device has a pre-installed application to configure the remote control with TV called Remoter Config. If you want to control KM7 via smartphone, just install it Android TV Remote Control app or CetusPlay app.
Streaming Services via MECOOL KM7
MECOOL KM7 supports Youtube, Prime Video, Disney+, Google Play Movies up to 4K 2160p HDR (HDR10, HDR10+). HBO Go up to 1080p. Spotify works fine as well. The device does not have Netflix certification, but through the modified application you can get a display from 720p to 1080p.
[tie_index]Operating system and components[/tie_index]
Operating system and components
KM7 streaming box runs on Android TV 11.0, Kernel version 5.4.86, and supports OTA updates. The device uses firmware version RTT0.210608.002.20210825. As we mentioned, the MECOOL KM7 is equipped with a new Amlogic S905Y4 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 CPU @ processor up to 2.0GHz and GPU Mali-G31MP2, CPU speed between 100MHz and 2.0GHz. As you know this chipset supports 4K AV1 decoding (AV1 MP-10@L5.1 up to 4Kx2K@60fps)
Why is it worth getting a streaming player that uses AV1 decoding?
Most of the currently popular streaming services use the latest AV1 decoding. AV1 is a high-performance, royalty-free video codec that provides 20% improved compression efficiency over HEVC/VP9 and manages to save up to 30% in bandwidth for the same image quality.
Besides device supports Google Widevine L1/Playready. The device does not have root access. Some screenshots.
[tie_index]Performance tests and benchmarks[/tie_index]
MECOOL KM7 Review: Performance tests and benchmarks
For testing, we use Benchmark 9.1.1, GeekBench 4, 3D Mark and Kodi 19.3.
